2016 Calgary Stampede poster and the poster artwork legacy

The Calgary Stampede unveiled our 2016 poster in the Shaikh Family Welcome Gallery of the Calgary Public Library’s central branch on October 5, 2015. Community members and Stampede volunteers and employees were thrilled when the curtain pulled back to reveal the priceless piece by award-winning local artist, Michelle Grant: Born to Buck, pictured below.

What’s Happening at Stampede Park: May 21 – 27

Thousands of runners and walkers of all levels in the city are getting set for the Scotiabank Calgary Marathon as it blazes through Stampede Park this week.

  • Scotiabank Calgary Marathon:  Lace up your shoes and join thousands of other runners and walkers for the Scotiabank Calgary Marathon Race Weekend on May 25-27, 2012.  The Scotiabank Calgary Marathon is a challenging, competitive and fun event with a race designed for everyone of any level. Events include the Scotiabank Marathon, Centaur Subaru half marathon, Jugo Juice 10K, AstraZeneca 5K Walk and Run and Scotiabank Kids Marathon.  Stampede Park is the new start and finish venue and for more information, see here.
  • Cultural Nite XIX: The Untold Tales of a Pinoy Culture Club:  The University of Calgary’s Filipino Student’s Association invite you to watch Cultural Nite XIX: The Untold Tales of a Pinoy Culture Club.  This annual student-led theatre production showcases different Filipino folk dances such as Tinikling and Singkil, incorporated in a play written by the club’s own members.  May 26 at 7 p.m. in the Boyce Theatre.  For more information about tickets, see here.

This week features an assortment of entertainment at Stampede Park as Van Halen, The Black Keys and Stars on Ice all make their return to Calgary.  Plus, help ring in Calgary’s year as the Cultural Capital of Canada with Calgary 2012′s Sweet City Opening Celebration!

  • Soaring:  An Indigenous Youth Career Conference:  Formerly known as Blueprint for the Future, this youth career conference is designed to attract First Nation, Métis and Inuit high school students to the wide array of potential careers available in all employment sectors.  Featuring key not and motivational speakers, career workshops and exhibitors from all sectors of industry.  Tuesday, May 8 in the BMO Centre.  Pre-registration is required.
  • Van Halen:  Grammy award-winning Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductees Van Halen are returning to Calgary this week as part of their 2012 A Different Kind of Truth tour in support of their new album of the same name, along with special guests Kool & The Gang.  Wednesday, May 9 at the Scotiabank Saddledome.  Tickets for the concert are available through Ticketmaster.
  • Calgary 2012 Sweet City Opening Celebration:  Every momentous movement deserves to be launched in style! Help kick-off a full year of cultural activity with the wildest party of the year. Themes are Looking Back, Calgary Now, Looking Forward – and EVERYONE IS INVITED.   • Funny Money with James Cunnigham:  Funny Money is North America’s #1 FUN-ancial lecture.  Designed to educate and entertain, this program helps people to learn the basics of personal finances using comedy, multimedia and audience participation.  Featuring comedian James Cunningham.  Thursday, May 10 in the Boyce Theatre.
  • The Black Keys:  American Grammy-award winning rock duo The Black Keys are back on tour to promote their new album El Camino and they’ll be performing in Calgary this week along with special guests Arctic Monkeys.  Friday, May 11 at 8 p.m. in the Saddledome.  Tickets for the concert are available through Ticketmaster.
  • Stars on Ice:  The world’s premier figure skating tour returns with an ensemble cast of Olympic, World and National Champions.  This year’s Love ‘n’ Life tour features four-time figure skating World Champion Kurt Browning as he brings his directing talents to the tour for the first time.  The magic takes place on Sunday, May 13 at 4 p.m. at the Saddledome.  Tickets for the show are available through Ticketmaster.

The geeks are on the move as the Calgary Comic & Entertainment Expo, Western Canada’s largest pop culture convention, hits Stampede Park this week.  Plus, this week also features the return of the Spring Festival of Crafts.

  • Calgary Comic & Entertainment Expo:  The place where pop culture enthusiasts, sci-fi freaks, anime junkies, cult-classic aficionados, nerds (and nerdettes!) and everyone in-between unite for a celebration that crosses all genres of everything that’s cool, quirky, or just plain fun.  Special guests this year include comic book legend Stan Lee, Adam West, and the entire cast of Star Trek: The Next Generation.  Western Canada’s largest pop culture convention runs April 28 and 29 in the BMO Centre.  Tickets available at the door.
  • Spring Festival of Crafts:  Spring is a time for renewal and what better way to usher in the new season than by shopping for unique products to brighten your home, to delight your senses or simply spoil yourself. What’s Happening at Stampede Park: April 16 – 22

The spotlight is on Agriculture this week at Stampede Park as Calgary Stampede Aggie Days presented by Encana takes place in the BMO Centre.  Also check out the Canadian Horseshoeing Championships, Stock Dog Arena Trials and the Calgary Stampede Spring Extreme Cowboy Race all happening this weekend as well.

  • Calgary Stampede Aggie Days presented by Encana:  Everything you need to know about where your food comes from!  Enjoy interactive agriculture activities, watch a miniature horse read a book, see sheep get a haircut, enjoy Indian dancing and more during Family Fun Days April 21 and 22 at the BMO Centre, Stampede Park. Fun for the whole family and admission is FREE for everyone!
  • Canadian Horseshoeing Championships:  Watch the sparks fly at the 10th Anniversary Canadian Horseshoeing Championships as the best teams of blacksmiths and farriers from all over Canada vie for bragging rights and a free entry to the World Blacksmiths’ Competition in July.  The competition will once again conduct all classes using traditional coke fires, which makes for an interesting experience.  Held in conjunction with Aggie Days, check it out April 19-21 in the Big Top.  Admission to this event is free.
  • Clock, Stock and Barrel – Stock Dog Arena Trials:  Dog lovers and animal lovers unite as they cheer on their favourite stock dogs in the Clock, Stock and Barrel – Stock Dog Arena Trials.  This timed trial challenges handlers and their stock dogs to move three sheep through a defined course and into a pen, in the fastest time.  The trick:  The handler controls the dog, either through whistle or voice commands. The handler must stay in the handler’s circle until all the sheep have come through the chute.  Exciting to watch and fun for the whole family, check it out Saturday, April 21 in the Stampede Corral.  Held in conjunction with Aggie Days, admission to this event is free.
  • Calgary Stampede Spring Extreme Cowboy Race:  The Extreme Cowboy Race founded by famed horseman Craig Cameron is a multi-faceted equestrian sporting event that showcases both horse and rider as they maneuver through a series of obstacles demonstrating both their amazing horsemanship skills and incredible speed.  Past obstacles have included archery shoots, waterfalls, riding through flares and smoke, and even rifle shooting.  Held in conjunction during Aggie Days, check it out on Sunday, April 22 in the Stampede Corral.
  • Youth Employment Summer Hiring Fair:  What will you do this summer?  The City of Calgary Youth Employment Centre is hosting its 14th annual Summer Hiring Fair.  Geared to youth aged 15-24, employers will be hiring full time, part time and seasonal employees.  Youth are encouraged to bring their résumés, dress to impress and be ready for interviews.  Tuesday, April 17 from 1:30 to 6 p.m. in the Big Four Building.
  • Coldplay:  Grammy award-winning British alternative band Coldplay will be stopping in Calgary this week on their North American tour promoting their new double platinum album Mylo Xyloto along with special guests Metronomy and The Pierces.  It all starts Wednesday, April 18 at 7 p.m. at the Scotiabank Saddledome.  Tickets for the concert are available through Ticketmaster.
  • Habitat for Humanity Fundraiser Gala:  An inaugural gala evening in support of Habitat for Humanity Southern Alberta’s Women Build 2012, join emcee Tara Nelson from CTV Calgary for a memorable evening featuring terrific silent and live auction items, tasty culinary treats and a great country music performance.  It all takes place on Thursday, April 19 in the Palomino Room, BMO Centre.  Tickets for the gala are available online.

  • NHL Hockey:  Every game matters as the Calgary Flames play thrice this week at the Scotiabank Saddledome as they continue to pursue that elusive eight and final playoff spot in the Western Conference.  First, the take on the Dallas Stars on Monday, March 26 at 7 p.m. followed by the Los Angeles Kings on Wednesday, March 28 at 7:30 p.m. and finally the Colorado Avalanche on Friday, March 30 at 7 p.m.  Tickets for all three games are available through Ticketmaster.

A wide mix of events and activities this week at Stampede Park as the 127th annual Calgary Stampede Dairy Classic Championship Show gets underway, along with performances by Hedley and Pitbull, the return of The Grape Escape and The Outdoor Adventure & Travel Show, plus the Calgary Hitmen start WHL playoff action this week as well.

  • CS Dairy Classic Championship Show:  The 127th Calgary Stampede Dairy Classic expects to attract farmers from Canada’s four Western provinces, bringing about 150 cattle hailing from the Jersey, Black and White Holstein, and Red and White Holstein breeds.  Taking place Friday, March 23 and Saturday, March 24 in the Agriculture Building and Victoria Pavilion, the Jersey Show will take place on the Friday, while the Holsteins will take place on the Saturday.  A Youth Judging clinic will also take place on Thursday, March 22.  All events and activities are open to the public and admission is free.  For more information, check out Stampede Agriculture.
  • Hedley:  Juno award-winning Vancouver rock band Hedley is on tour promoting their fourth studio album Storms and they’re coming to the Scotiabank Saddledome this week.  Featuring special guests Classified, Anjulie and Kay, it all starts at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, March 20.  Tickets for the concert are available through Ticketmaster.

  • Oldtimers Hockey Challenge:  The Oldtimer’s Hockey Challenge is designed to give fans and players alike an opportunity to celebrate a common joy of the game, while at the same time giving much needed funds to worth organizations.  Featuring the Calgary Police Association hockey team as they take on Legendary Hockey Heroes, a portion of the proceeds from each ticket sold will go to supporting under privileged children in Calgary.  Tuesday, March 22 at 7 p.m. in the Scotiabank Saddledome.  Tickets available through Ticketmaster.
  • NHL Hockey:  The Calgary Flames play twice this week at the Saddledome.  First, they take on the San Jose Sharks on Tuesday, March 13 at 7:30 p.m. followed by the Phoenix Coyotes on Thursday, March 15 at 7 p.m.  Tickets for both games are available through Ticketmaster.
  • Calgary International Auto and Truck Show:  Presented by the Calgary Motor Dealers’ Association, the 32nd annual Calgary International Auto & Truck Show is the premiere event for auto enthusiasts to get up close and personal with the newest daily drivers and the hottest exotics.  Featuring the latest in automotive technology, true car buffs will find some of the fastest, revolutionary and most expensive automobiles in the world.  March 14 – 18 in the BMO Centre.  Tickets available at the door or online.
  • WHL Hockey:  The Calgary Hitmen also play twice this week at the Saddledome.  First, they take on the Lethbridge Hurricanes on Wednesday, March 14, followed by the the Kootenay Ice on Saturday, March 17.  Both games start a 7 p.m. and tickets for both are available through Ticketmaster.
  • Lady Antebellum – Own the Night 2012 World Tour:  Country pop music group Lady Antebellum is on tour promoting their latest album Own the Night and they’re coming to Calgary!  Check them out along with special guests Darius Rucker and Thompson Square on Friday, March 16 at 7 p.m. at the Saddledome.  Tickets for the show are available through Ticketmaster.

What’s Happening at Stampede Park: February 27 – March 4

The 112th Annual Calgary Bull Sale takes place this week, and the Calgary Kennel and Obedience Club is holding their Spring Show as well.

  • Calgary Bull Sale:  2012 marks the 112th Annual Calgary Bull Sale held in Calgary, Alberta. The Calgary Bull Sale is the benchmark for other bull sales across the prairie provinces of Canada. The sale attracts Alberta’s top quality beef bulls and offers bulls for sale to meet all ranchers’ budgets.  February 29 and March 1 in the Agriculture Building.  Bid in person or online.
  • NHL Hockey:  The Calgary Flames play twice this week at the Scotiabank Saddledome.  First, they take on the St. Louis Blues on Monday, February 27 at 7 p.m. followed by the Dallas Stars on Sunday, March 4 at 4 p.m.  Tickets for both games are available through Ticketmaster.
  • WHL Hockey:  Meanwhile the Calgary Hitmen also play twice this week at the Saddledome.  First, they take on the Swift Current Broncos on Wednesday, February 29, followed by the Saskatoon Blades on Friday, March 2.  Both games start at 7 p.m. and tickets for both games are available through Ticketmaster.
  • CKOC Spring All Breed Dog Show:  The Calgary Kennel and Obedience Club will be holding their Spring Show this week at Stampede Park.  Featuring conformation, puppy sweeps, two obedience trials, one rally obedience trial, junior handling and more!  Tickets available at the door.
  • NLL Lacrosse:  The Calgary Roughnecks take on the Minnesota Swarm at the Saddledome this week.  The action all starts on Saturday, March 3 at 7 p.m.  Tickets for the game are available through Ticketmaster.

This week features the return of the Calgary Home & Garden Show, Winefest and the APEGGA Science Olympics.

  • NHL Hockey:  The Calgary Flames play thrice this week at the Scotiabank Saddledome.  First, the Flames take on the Edmonton Oilers on Tuesday, February 21 at 7 p.m., followed by the Phoenix Coyotes on Thursday, February 23, also at 7 p.m.  The Flames finish off the week by taking on the Philadelphia Flyers on Saturday, February 25 at 8 p.m.  Tickets for all three games are available through Ticketmaster.
  • WHL Hockey:  The Calgary Hitmen also play thrice this week at the Saddledome.  First, the Hitmen take on the Medicine Hat Tigers on Wednesday, February 22 at 7 p.m., followed by the Edmonton Oil Kings on Friday, February 24 also at 7 p.m.  Finally, they take on the Kelowna Rockets on Sunday, February 24 at 4 p.m.  Tickets for all three games are available through Ticketmaster.
