Highlights for Tuesday July 7, 2009

Western Heritage Day

Seniors are invited to come down and enjoy the Calgary Stampede with free admission all day plus free refreshments and entertainment in the Stampede Corral. Seniors also receive free WestJet Skyrides all day and a free bingo play at the top of each hour.

Showbands Live!

Don’t miss Showbands Live! Where nearly 1,000 competitors from as far away as Australia and Taiwan compete for top honours and prize money. Competition starts at 1 p.m. The Showcase Performance is at 6 p.m. and the awards ceremony is held at 8 p.m. in the Pengrowth Saddledome.

Rodeo

Rodeo action continues at 1:30 p.m. today. New for 2009 Western Heritage Day, seniors can get Free Copper Section Rodeo and Evening Show tickets (limited seating). Tickets are available at the Grandstand Ticket Office starting at 10 a.m.

Ag-tivities

The Canadian National Miniature Horse show wraps up today with shows from 8 a.m. to noon at The Big Top and from 3 p.m. to 5:45 p.m. at Northern Lights. The Canadian Supreme Halter Champion will be awarded at the end of the show.

New “Must-Sees”

The Heebee-jeebees are new on the Coca-Cola Stage for 2009. Showtimes today at 12:45 p.m. and 3:30 p.m.

Indian Village

The Indian Village has been part of the Calgary Stampede since 1912. Watch traditional handgames, cheer at a tipi raising contest, admire native handicrafts or learn about traditional meat cutting skills. Open from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m.

Highlights for Monday, July 6, 2009

World Stock Dog Championship Finals

Watch these highly skilled dogs herd sheep through a course and into a pen as their handlers guide them with a whistle or voice commands. Some handlers even direct their dogs with only the slightest hand gestures. It’s fascinating to watch and finals begin tonight at 7:30 p.m. in the Pengrowth Saddledome with the winner taking home $10,000.

Team Penning Championship Finals

Watch a race against the clock as the skills of horse and rider square off against the herd instincts of cattle. The winners of today’s finals will get their share of over $200,000 in prize money. This event is located in the Pengrowth Saddledome at 5 p.m.

Rodeo

It’s the last day for Pool A to compete in the six major rodeo events – saddle bronc, bareback, bull riding, tie-down roping, steer wrestling and ladies barrel racing. Each event has $17,500 up for prize money daily. They are vying for a spot in Final Sunday for the richest ride in rodeo with total prize money topping $2 million.

Farm Families Recognized

BMO and the Calgary Stampede honour 19 outstanding Alberta farm families with the BMO Farm Family Awards in the Palomino Room from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Meet Dora The Explorer

Come on, vamanos! Dora is visiting Jaycee Park from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on July 6 and July 7. This is a special chance to get a hug and a photo from this popular children’s character.

New “Must-Sees”

Visit Western Oasis, new for 2009 and located in the newly expanded BMO Centre Halls D and E. Enjoy western art and lifestyle displays while taking a break in the relaxing oasis areas, complete with natural outdoor elements such as stone, greenery and water features. While there, don’t miss the Western Oasis wine garden where guests can enjoy wine samples and learn more about wines from our Stampede hosts.

Check out Les Vitamines on the Saddledome Plaza Stage. New for 2009, this hilarious pair of juggling acrobats has wowed audiences across North America. Showtimes throughout the day.

Music

Today’s Best Music Monday presented by Energy 101.5 features a great line-up: Carly Rae Jepsen, Serena Ryder, the New Cities and Simple Plan on the Coca-Cola Stage. The afternoon performance with JUNO award-winning Serena Ryder is the first time the Stampede presents a highlight act on the Coca-Cola Stage during the day. The show begins at 3 p.m.

Highlights for Sunday July 5, 2009

Petro-Canada Family Day

Today is all about family fun! Get into the park for free from 6 a.m. to 9 a.m. Free pancake breakfast served to the first 20,000 people with a breakfast ticket (distributed at the entrances) from 7 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. served in the Grandstand courtyard. While you feast on pancakes, enjoy Beverly Mahood, The Higgins and the Vos Family Singers on the Grandstand stage.

Fun and Games

The kids are going to go crazy for the Doodlebops on the Coca-Cola stage at 11:30 a.m., 1 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. They are very popular so early attendance is recommended.

Get a Petro-Canada Family Day Passport at the Guest Services booth or at locations around the Park, then redeem a completed passport for a free Olympic glass and a chance to win $2,500 in Petro-Canada gasoline.

On Family Day, the popular Superdogs add an additional show to their schedule at 10 a.m. in the Stampede Corral.

Clop me Amadeus

To see beauty, might and music, catch the Six Horse hitch in the Pengrowth Saddledome at 1 p.m. with live music by members of the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra. This event is free with your gate admission.

Fool me twice, you must be a diver – catch the Flying Fools High Dive Show at the Midway Circus where this zany group dives into a water tank from 20 and 90 feet in the air. Daily shows at 12:30 p.m., 3 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. with an additional show on Petro-Canada Family Day at 10:30 a.m.

Highlights for Saturday July 4, 2009

Rodeo

This year’s Calgary Stampede rodeo is a “rodeo of champions”. Forty of the 120 competing athletes are either current or past champions. Today is Day 2 of Pool A, which ends on Monday. The top four money winners of Pool A and B advance to Showdown Sunday and the remaining six competitors in both pools compete on Wild Card Saturday.

Team Cattle Penning
Horsemanship meets teamwork in this highly skilled competition. Teams of three have 60 seconds to separate three cattle from a herd of 30 for their chance at more than $200,000 in prize money. The event begins at 5 p.m. at the Pengrowth Saddledome.

ATCO Kitchen Theatre

Watch Sandi Richards, host of Fixing Dinner on the Food Network, at the ATCO Kitchen Theatre Stage located in BMO Centre. Shows start at 1 p.m. and 5 p.m.

In the all-new Midway Circus, cheer on “Iggy the Piggy” among others in the all-new Celebrity Racing Pigs. Other barnyard animals also compete in these hilarious races that are fun for the whole family. This event occurs daily at 11:30 a.m., 2 p.m. and 6 p.m. Additional shows are available on July 5 and July 8 at 9:30 a.m.

Sneak-A-Peek

Get a first look at the 2009 Calgary Stampede with Sneak-A-Peek. General Park admission is only $7. Children 6 and under are free. Great acts like Superdogs are on at 7:30 p.m.  It’s your last chance to get discounted Ride Passes at Mac’s Convenience stores.  Midway rides and food kiosks are open 6 p.m. to midnight.

Budweiser Blank Ticket

The Calgary Stampede presents Budweiser Blank Ticket at Nashville North at 9 p.m. This mystery concert is an exclusive event but if you are down on the Park you may be lucky to get in the doors.  Guests must be 18 years and older.

Midway opens for Sneak-A-Peek at 6 p.m.

The Midway opens at 6 p.m. on Sneak-A-Peek night. This year, visitors to Stampede Park will be able to experience 34 rides, 24 more counting those for kids. The newest ride this year is the Bonzai, which will have guests flipping 360 degrees, high above the midway for a thrilling experience.

Seventh Rain, Marianas Trench and Craig Moritz on Stage

Calgary Stampede has so many musical acts that it’s now one of Canada’s largest music festivals. On the Coca-Cola Stage tonight is Seventh Rain at 8 p.m. followed by Marianas Trench performing their chart hit “Cross My Heart”. Craig Moritz is on stage at Nashville North.

The Bell GetAway

The Bell GetAway located in the Big Four Building is open from 5 p.m. to 11 p.m. This is a new attraction that guests can rock out, enjoy a break in the lounge areas or experience the latest in technology with gaming.  On July 2, visitors can experience the Dance Crew Street sessions featuring the Original Rudes, IllFX and O’mighty Bboy Crew dance groups.

New this year is the Loose Moose Theatre Company on the Buckaroos Stage at the Big Four Building. This show gets the kids involved with a cowboy twist on some classic fables. And check out Comic Relief, get a photo taken, have it put into a personalized comic strip and take it home for free. Also check out the Midway Circus featuring Celebrity Racing Pigs at 6 p.m., the Flying Fools High Dive Show at 7:30 p.m. and Freestyle Motocross at 8:30 p.m.
