The 2015 Calgary Stampede Poster

Historically, we have unveiled the poster art at the Western Art Show opening night in July. This year, as a surprise, we unveiled the artwork at the 2014 GMC Rangeland Derby Canvas Auction.

The artwork pays homage to the chuckwagon drivers and horses that have been an integral part of the Stampede for 91 years. Calgary Stampede vice-chairman of the board, Bill Gray, retained the services of artist Oleg Stavrowsky to create the masterpiece.

“This year, I wanted to insert some action into the poster—and nothing speaks of action more than the chuckwagon races,” says Gray. “The chuckwagon races have been a part of the Stampede since 1923 and are one of the most exciting events during the 10-day Stampede. To capture this iconic event, I chose an artist who has a particular talent for bringing his subjects to life.”

Stavrowsky’s original artwork depicts the thundering chuckwagon races of the Calgary Stampede. The incredible detail in the piece was achieved through Stavrowsky’s three-part process. Initial pencil sketches were completed then he built a wooden “scale model” of wagons for an accurate reference for the painting. The figures and horses in the piece are painted from life, real horses and real people.

“Being granted the opportunity to create the artwork for the 2015 Calgary Stampede poster was an honour,” says Stavrowsky. “Western art is my passion; there are so many aspects of western heritage that I could capture. I chose to paint the chuckwagon to represent the spirit and the action of the Calgary Stampede.”

Stavrowsky, an American born artist, came to realize his love for western art, following a visit to the Cowboy Hall of Fame in Oklahoma City in 1969. “My passion for painting has since become my life, income, joy, my everything,” says Stavrowsky. In August of 2013, Stavrowsky was one of the first artists to become a member of the Russell Skull Society of Artists, a new elite group of contemporary western artists.

Ultimately, the 2015 original artwork will be on display at the Western Oasis until it is sold during the Western Art Auction on Thursday, July 10, 2014 at 6 p.m. in the Palomino Room, BMO Centre. Tickets for the auction can be purchased from the Western Art Sales Desk located in the Western Oasis, BMO Centre.

The Calgary Stampede has been creating posters for more than 100 years. Although they have now become a collectors piece, they were original used as the primary form of promotion for the event.

Alberta Government supports Calgary Arts Academy and Calgary Stampede vision to nourish young minds

youth-campus

The Calgary Stampede and the Calgary Arts Academy began collaborating a few years ago with the vision to create a unique educational space where youth would be able to pursue excellence in performing arts.

Through a unique partnership between the Alberta government, the Calgary Arts Academy and the Calgary Stampede and its Calgary Youth Campus, we will see the historic Weston Bakery at Stampede Park be transformed into a modern learning facility to house The Calgary Arts Academy. Arts Academy students will benefit from access to new learning space and from existing campus theatre and performance space in the park. Calgary Stampede Showband, The Young Canadians School of Performing Arts, Stampede School, Calgary Arts Academy and arts based community groups will now be able to share resources and learnings as well as spaces in Youth Campus.

By creating together, the youth campus will be a vortex that is inspired and alive.  From morning to night, youth will gather in pursuit of academic excellence in the arts – the raw development of creative talent.

The Mo Story

It’s that time of year again when mustaches start popping up all over the city. This year Calgary Stampede employees and volunteers will be growing signature cowboy-themed mustaches throughout the month to raise funds to support prostate cancer research and treatment.

To make things interesting, if the Stampede team raises more than $10,000, long-time mustachioed vice-president of park development Warren Connell will shave off his legendary mustache, which last saw a razor in 1988!

Waste Management Green Team Celebrates 39 Years of Clean Grounds for Visitors to Stampede

For 39 years, the Calgary Stampede and the Boys and Girls Clubs of Calgary have partnered together to remove garbage from the Stampede grounds. For the past seven years, Waste Management of Canada (WM) has been sponsoring the work experience program.

This year, the Boys and Girls Clubs of Calgary has recruited, hired, and trained 220 youth and 45 adult supervisors to clean the grounds as part of the WM Green Team during the 10 days of Stampede in a unique learn-to-work project that teaches young people how to work, and take pride in what they do.

The youth who are hired as team members of the WM Green Team will learn team work skills, time management, and expectations of the workforce. For many of these youth, this is their first job, and many will come back for several years, as they enjoy the experience so much. Some participants are new Canadians and even improved their English as they were working with many different youth. In the end, the WM Green Team receives valuable work experience, training, references, a pay cheque, and hopefully, a sense of belonging in their new country.

Each year youth tell the Stampede about their experience, many of them highlight the smell of the food on the Midway and meeting new people as their favourite moments.

“I think it is important to lead by example, so when people see me working on the WM Green Team, I hope it makes them think to pick up after themselves and recycle.” – Joey, 13 years

“My experience working on WM’s Green Team has taught me how to work with others and make positive choices” – Samantha, 16 years

“WM is dedicated to helping young Calgarians develop a strong sense of civic pride, teamwork and respect for the environment. We’re proud to support the Green Team program, because it provides fantastic opportunities for youth to learn important life skills,” – Diane Kossman, WM Communications Manager.

The Boys and Girls Club programs and services focus on identifying and creating opportunities that help young people acquire the building blocks to transition into self-sufficient adults. From recreation and leadership programs to a shelter for homeless youth, our programs and services are community-based providing life-enhancing skills to create positive outcomes for children, youth and their families.
