Meet the OH Ranch Manager, Ken Pigeon

The OH Ranch is special. In the ranching community it is well known and has been cared for in a high regard. In December 2012, I was named Calgary Stampede OH Ranch manager and began working and living at the ranch. I’m pretty excited to be part of this chapter of history at the OH Ranch.

Over the next year we will post a series of blogs about ranching and I’m looking forward to sharing photos of the 8,000 acres of beautiful land that is part of the OH Ranch.

First I would like to share a little information about my ken2family and experience. I’m married to Deb, who has a family history of owning and running a riding stable in Jasper National Park. Deb is looking forward to our first summer at the OH. Our son Clinton graduated from the University of Lethbridge with a degree in business last year, and our daughter Jessie is working on her psychology degree at Mount Allison in Sackville, New Brunswick.

I am an Olds College graduate and have more than two decades of experience in ranch management with various ranches throughout Alberta. For the last 24 years I developed extensive experience in care and maintenance of cow/calf herds, project and financial management and maintaining healthy range conditions for cattle, horses and wildlife.

I also have maintained longstanding relationships in the Longview area including community groups, ranchers, cowboys, ranch owners and government agencies. I’m excited to promote the Calgary Stampede western values though the OH Ranch and being a hands on manager.

INDIAN PRINCESS TRAVELLING TO GERMANY

Germany Cover

The Indian Princess subcommittee is so excited to announce that once again, our Indian Princess will be traveling internationally in 2013.

Amber will also dance at a Canadian Tourism Commission event at the Canadian Embassy on March 7 and attend a breakfast with press from around the world at the Funkturm on March 9.

The Indian Princess subcommittee wishes to thank the Calgary Stampede Tourism department and the Canadian Tourism Commission for once again providing an opportunity for the Indian Princess to participate in an international event and for this incredible opportunity for Amber.

The Journey Continues

As you all have already heard the count down is on for our trip to the Houston Rodeo!!!! My Stampede sisters and I are so excited, this is a dream come true.  We will be promoting the Calgary Stampede and sharing our Western hospitality with the cowgirls and cowboys down south.

The one thing that is very important in any trip is having a good set of luggage to take with you. We were very fortunate to have Sears sponsor the Trio and supply us with three different sizes of suitcases each. Danielle, Catherine, and I have already tested them out on our trips to Banff, Edmonton, and of course Grey Cup in Toronto. They worked wonderfully and even could handle all our make-up, hair products, boots, and bling.

Even though we are very anxious to board the airplane and head out, we still have to keep focus on events around the city. Just last Saturday we had the pleasure of being invited to the 2nd Annual Calgary Bluegrass and Roots Music Festival where we were able to sit and listen to a few live bands play and mix and mingle with people who enjoy the Bluegrass style of music. Bluegrass is traditionally played on acoustic stringed instruments and is a form of American roots music and is mixed with Scottish, English, Welsh, and Irish traditional music. It was very enjoyable to be introduced to this different style of music.

This is the last you will hear from me till we return from our trip. I can’t wait to go and represent the Calgary Stampede and share all our experiences with you.

Exciting Royalty News: Time to Head South of the Border!!

This past week we have received news that Jessica, Catherine and I get to travel to not only one but TWO destinations south of the border at the end of this month and beginning of March! Our first stop in our south of the border adventures will bring us to the Houston Texas Stock Show & Rodeo…aka one of the largest rodeos in North America holding over 71,000 fans!! This rodeo is held in Reliant Stadium, home to the Houston Texans NFL football, when it’s not rodeo season of course ;) and is home to one of my favorite football players from the Houston Texans, defensive end #99-  J.J Watt! …Now whether he is a rodeo fan is not certain, but who knows, he might get home sick and visit his stadium while we are there…here’s to hoping!

Reliant_Stadium_Houston_RodeoThroughout the course of this annual event, not only does the rodeo attract fans, they also have a livestock show, horse show, shopping venues, concerts and a carnival all throughout their 21 day long event! Although no rodeo could ever hold a candle to the Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth, the Calgary Stampede, being able to be an invited guest to such a large event is really quite exciting! My Stampede sisters and I all have a soft spot for Texas and being able to represent the Calgary Stampede and Canada in a state that we all love is going to be an experience of a lifetime and one that we cannot wait for!! We will be spending a week in Houston, February 25th to March 1st, attending the stock show and rodeo events, mixing and mingling with fans and enjoying the southern hospitality that Texas is so famous for :) I cannot wait!!

Now going to Texas is not the only form of excitement we get to experience south of the border. At the beginning of March we also get to visit the state of sunshine, surf and Hollywood: California! We will be visiting the city of Los Angeles for four days and get to attend a Calgary Flames vs. LA Kings game while we are there! Along with the hockey game, media appearances and multiple events throughout the city, my Stampede sisters and I cannot wait to visit and learn more about the state of sunshine while representing and teaching others about the Calgary Stampede. I don’t know if those in Los Angeles know about the Calgary Stampede, but you can be certain that once we have left our mark on the great California city that they sure will!hollywood-blvd-sign-400_5_300x3001Despite all of the exciting talk of travel, my Stampede sisters and I have been busy here at home with events around the city as well. Last week we celebrated the annual wrap-up of the Grey Cup Committee’s efforts in their big trip to Toronto. While we got to mix, mingle and share a great dinner with some familiar faces we cannot thank the Grey Cup Committee enough for their hospitality and smiles throughout our days cheering on the Calgary Stampeders! We are so grateful for the experiences and support that the committee gave us while we were in Toronto as it has most definitely helped us in preparing for the Stampede and the busy summer that is ahead of us!

I would also like to take this time to thank our sponsors, Lammle’s and Janine’s Custom Creations for their efforts in outfitting us throughout the year and especially spoiling us with new wardrobe pieces for our upcoming trips! As we always want to make a great impression everywhere we go, we want to be able to continue to show our great fashion sense to those in the United States and show that Canadian Royalty, especially those representing the Calgary Stampede, know how to dress to impress for all occasions! So thank you again to Lammle’s and Janine’s Custom Creations for making us look the part!

Before I sign off I would just like to say how amazing of an experience being a Calgary Stampede Princess has been already! Throughout all the events that we have experienced so far and for those yet to come, the memories, people we have met and laughs we have shared have shown me how truly blessed I am to be given such an opportunity :)

Finally, make sure to follow us on our Facebook page, Calgary Stampede Queen & Princesses, and our Twitter account, @StampedeQandP, to keep up with our adventures while we are away so you can get an up-to-date glimpse into some of the exciting memories we will be making! Next time I will be talking to you will be after our Houston adventure and let me tell you, I’m one excited princess and cannot wait to report back to you of all of our memories from our Texas adventures!….they say everything is bigger and better in Texas….so we will just have to wait and see about that!;)

PS- Here are some George Strait songs that seem rather fitting for the adventures that my Stampede sisters and I are getting ready to enjoy! Have a great week :)

149 days until Stampede !

149 days until Stampede !! It is unbelievable how fast the time goes by. It`s been 4 months already since we have been crowned 2013 Calgary Stampede Royalty and my Stampede sisters and I are getting so excited about summer – it is getting closer and closer!

As you know, the Stampede keep us busy all year around and we have been to different events every week. Last Monday, the girls and I were at The Big Rock School in Okotoks for the Celebrity Reading Week. It was such a fun event; we were there to read books to the children in different classes. The students also had the opportunity to ask us questions about our Stampede adventure, but the most popular questions were about our favorite sports team… ahaha! My favourite moment was when I taught the first grade class to count to 12 in French!

2013 Calgary Stampede Royalty/ Indian Princess

Once you`re in this exciting adventure of being a Calgary Stampede Princess, you quickly realize that nothing would be possible without the incredible work of the volunteers and the generous sponsors. All the advisors and members of the Calgary Stampede Royalty Committee give so many hours of their time to take care of us and make sure that this year will be unforgettable. Today, I would like to say a big thank you to all of these amazing volunteers and sponsors. A special thank you to two of our AMAZING sponsors : Shaw GMC and Bar T5. Shaw GMC provide us a spacious Yukon during the entire year, it gets us everywhere we need to be; safe and sound. Plus they also provide us a pick up truck to pull the horse trailer whenever we need it. Bar T5 provides a comfy ride for our royal ponies, Hawk, Snoopy and Kansas! With the generosity of these two sponsors we can attend many parades and rodeos during the year! THANK YOU SO MUCH !!
