To mark the Calgary Stampede’s 100 year anniversary, the Next Generation Committee (NGC) has been honoured with the task of creating and filling a time capsule. It’s a fantastic project that on the surface seems simple, but in reality is quite daunting!
How do you fit 100 proud years of Stampede history into one time capsule?
Do you only include items that are purely Stampede memorabilia or do you add items that symbolize the profound impact that the Calgary Stampede has on the City of Calgary, charities, not-for-profit organizations, the citizens of Calgary and/or guest from around the world?
As many of us know, the Calgary Stampede has a huge impact on all aspects of life in this great City, which goes far beyond the 10 festive days.
As an example, this year I joined the Mavericks Chuckwagon Racing Team and have discovered just how much more than chuckwagon racing the Mavericks are! For the past few months all 25 mavericks have been working hard to make the Mavericks Country Hills Golf Charity Classic a success.
This is the Mavericks 12th annual charity golf tournament, which is once again sold out of both golf spots and corporate sponsors who will come together tomorrow to raise money for Calgary and area charities. Over the years, the Mavericks have raised over $2 million through the the Big Hearted Mavericks Foundation, which is not for profit organization that raises money for children’s charities.
Some of the Charities that Big Hearted Mavericks Foundation works with include: The Children’s Link Society, Calgary Flames Foundation, Rainbow Society, The Prepp Reading Program, Cjay 92 and Classic Country Kids Funds, Between Friends Club, Kids Cancer Care Foundation and Ups and Downs Society.
The Mavericks Chuckwagon Racing Team is an example of the spirit of generosity that the Stampede inspires and the impact the event has on the City of Calgary. The Mavericks are much bigger than the 10 days of chuckwagon racing just as the Calgary Stampede is bigger than the 10 day event that makes it so famous.
While we may be able to fill the Calgary Stampede’s time capsule with 100 years’ worth of items that represent the history of this fantastic event, we will have to keep the spirit of generosity alive another way – I’m proud that I can now play my part though the tremendous fundraising efforts of the the Mavericks Chuckwagon Racing Team!
