Graduation Celebration with Students from Angola
January 31st, 2011 by Whitney Wilkie

As the Royal Trio we never stop spreading western heritage and values. On Saturday we attended the graduation celebration at SAIT for students from Angola becoming certified to work in the oil and gas industry. All the students received a White Hat and said the oath to become honourary Calgarians. Each student had a huge smile on their face when receiving their hat, which made this experience so heart warming. I felt such a huge sense of pride for what these students have accomplished for themselves, but also for their family and friends back at home. During the White Hat ceremony it was a blend of our culture and of Angola’s. After saying the oath, the students raised their hats in celebration, and then all started up in a chant in their own language. This was so unexpected but was such an interesting way of blending aspects from our culture and theirs.
Each student was so excited to see us and they all wanted their picture with the Royalty. These kinds of events are some of my favorite experiences I get as the Calgary Stampede Princess. I feel so honoured to be a part of these students’ great accomplishments and to share a part of my Calgary and Canadian culture. Being a part of giving a symbol of Calgary and the Stampede to these students was an uplifting experience. Seeing each of their faces light up after receiving their hat or taking a picture with us to show their family and friends at home, I know that the spreading of western hospitality did not end after the celebration on Saturday, because this experience will continue back home with them to Angola. I am so happy and full of gratitude for being a part of these students’ experience in Calgary and in Canada. This is truly what the Calgary Stampede is all about.
Following the ceremony there was a dance, and could those students move! I was so impressed with their sense rhythm because I sure can’t dance like that. All of our jaws dropped when the group of students got into formation and started line dancing the Electric Slide. We all were in awe, and joined in on the fun. What a way to wrap the evening.
