Another Monday, another chance to check out What’s Happening on Park in the next seven days! But before we get started with the usual, we have a very important announcement to pass on to all of you loyal Stampede Blog readers first:
We’ve all seen the devastation and suffering that the people of Haiti are facing right now. You have to be a pretty cold person not to emphasize with their plight. People from around the world are rallying to assist, and Calgary is no exception. Many Calgarians are doing what they can to raise funds; one such effort is #YYC4HAITI, and they could use your help.
They’re looking for donations of cash or items to be put towards a silent auction at an event to be held at Flames Central on Jan. 28. All proceeds will go to the Canadian Red Cross to be used to assist victims in Haiti, and it’s shaping up to become a spectacular fund-raiser! If you want to learn about how you can help out, check out their Facebook page. A dedicated website is coming soon, but if you want to learn more about how #YYC4HAITI came about, see here (it’s fascinating to see how quickly Calgarians can come together!), and you can become a part of the movement by following the on-going conversation on Twitter. Now’s your chance to step up and show off some of that Western Spirit and Hospitality that we Calgarians are known for by assisting with the local Haitian relief efforts!
And with that, we go back to our regularly scheduled program. The Canadian National Speedball Championships and The Wedding Fair are just two of the things that you can look forward to on Park in the week ahead; more details after the jump.
- PSAC and the Calgary Stampede are proud to host a night of fun and celebration. Come help us celebrate 25 years of “Care in the Air” by coming to the STARS & SPURS Gala! The party starts at 6 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 23. Dust off your best cowboy outfits and come listen to some great music by Jessie Farrell, all in support of a great cause.
- Getting hitched this year? Come on down to the largest and longest running Bridal/Wedding Fair in Calgary! The Wedding Fair (BMO Centre, Halls B-C, Sunday, Jan 24 from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.) is a place where you can see tons of great ideas for your special day, compare prices, and discuss wedding planning with over 200 highly qualified wedding retailers and service providers. Tickets will be available at the door, and more information on advance tickets can be found here.
- The Canadian National Speedball Championships are also this weekend, Jan. 23-24 in the Agriculture Building. For those unfamiliar with Speedball, it is a formalized version of the sport of Paintball complete with rules, objectives, and points to be earned. Come and see who will be crowned Canada’s Speedball champion!
- The NHL’s Calgary Flames play once this week against the Chicago Blackhawks on Thursday, Jan 21 at 7:30 p.m. at the Pengrowth Saddledome. Tickets for that game are available from Ticketmaster.
- The WHL’s Calgary Hitmen play three times this week. First, the Lethbridge Hurricanes drop by the Saddledome on Tuesday, Jan. 19 at 7 p.m., followed by the Moose Jaw Warriors on Friday, Jan. 22 at 7 p.m. and on Sunday Jan. 24 at 2 p.m. Tickets for all three games are available from Ticketmaster.
- The NLL’s Calgary Roughnecks play on Saturday, Jan. 23 at 7:30 p.m. Come watch as they take on the Washington Stealth. Tickets for that game are available from Ticketmaster.
- Finally, there are only 24 more days until Vancouver 2010! Who’s getting excited? We’re asking all Calgarians to Get Your Head in a Hat along the Torch Relay Route on Monday, Jan. 18 as our CEO Vern Kimball and President Dr. David Chalack take to the streets with the torch.
Now, before we say Happy Trails for this week, don’t forget to follow all the #YYC4HAITI conversation on Facebook and Twitter to find out how you can help the Haitian relief effort out!
And hey, while you’re at it, why not follow us as well? You can find us on Facebook at our Official fan page, and on Twitter at @calgarystampede and @HereAllYear. Thanks for tuning in, and we’ll see you here next Monday morning where we’ll highlight some more of the things happening Here. All Year.
