Hello everyone! I hope you all had a great, safe, turkey filled Thanksgiving weekend! I know I did! Did anyone go to that Metalocalypse show last week? I know I didn’t; too loud for this country girl! I also took time to check out the Team Cattle Penning National Finals at the Stampede Corral. Did anyone else go see? It was very interesting to watch how they work the cows! If you haven’t had a chance yet, then today’s your last day!

Now, while it may be the long weekend (at least here in Canada), it’s still Monday, which means it’s time for another What’s Happening where we’ll highlight some of the events and activities happening on Stampede Park this week. This is going to be another busy and diverse week, with activities ranging from wine/food, antiques, horses, and awards, so let’s get to it!

First, today may be the final day of the Team Cattle Penning National Finals, but it’s not the last time you’ll see cowboys and cowgirls suit up for competition at Stampede Park this year. Starting Wednesday Oct. 14 and continuing on until Sunday Oct. 18, horses, riders, and cows will be “Dancing” at the Calgary Stampede Cutting Horse Futurity presented by Wrangler. Why do we call the equine sport of Cutting a “Dance” among horse, rider, and cow? You can learn more here. The Futurity takes place at the Stampede Corral, and admission is free.

Next, come celebrate the people who make a difference in our world. Each year, the Calgary Stampede’s Western Legacy Awards honours individuals and organizations that demonstrate significant achievement in promoting Western values and preserving our Western heritage within the community. Awards are given out in three categories (Sustained Contribution, Innovation, and Youth), and you can help celebrate and honour these outstanding people by attending the awards ceremony on Tuesday Oct. 13 in the Palomino Ballroom in the BMO Centre. Tickets are complementary but seating is limited. For ticket availability and directions to reserve tickets, see here.

This week features a couple of concerts as well. First, Jay-Z will be playing at the Pengrowth Saddledome on Wednesday Oct. 14. He a dedicated and passionate musician who fought hard to become one of the most successful hip hop artists of all time. For ticket availability, see Ticketmaster.

For the kids out there, The Wiggles will be performing at the Saddledome for two shows only on Tuesday Oct. 13. Formed in Sydney, Australia in 1991, they are entertainers that have rewritten the book about how children can be entertained and educated with song and dance. For ticket availability, see Ticketmaster.

Do you love antiques? Then this show is for you! The Calgary Stampede Park Fall Antique Furniture and Collectibles Show & Sale will be happening October 15 to 18 in the Big Four Building, Hall A. Various antiques and collectibles will be on display for browsing and purchase. For more information, visit Antiques by Design.

If food and beverage is more your thing, then sample some of the world’s best wine, import beer, and premium spirits at the Rocky Mountain Wine and Food Festival! Gourmet food samples from local restaurants and hotels will also be served. The festival takes place between Oct. 15 and 17 in the BMO Centre, Halls A and B. For more information including ticket availability, see the festival’s website. Don’t forget to bring your appetite too!

In NHL Hockey, the battle for first place in the NW Division continues as the Calgary Flames start a five game home stand at the Saddledome on Friday Oct. 16 when the Vancouver Canucks come to town. Meanwhile, in the WHL, the Calgary Hitmen take on the Portland Winterhawks on Sunday Oct. 18. Both games start at 7 p.m.

As you can see, there’s something for everyone this week! Tune into the official Stampede Blog next Monday for another glimpse at some of the events happening Here. All Year.
