It’s Monday, which means it’s time for another edition of What’s Happening here on the Stampede Blog, where we’ll shine a bright spotlight on some of the various events happening at Stampede Park this week.
First up is the much-anticipated Canadian Rodeo Tour Championship presented by Wrangler. Happening at the Stampede Corral between Oct. 2-4, this event will give fans new and old the chance to see the best cowboys and cowgirls in Canada of the 2009 rodeo season go up against the toughest animals in the world, and is the culmination of the Canadian Rodeo Tour. Included with your ticket is free admission into the Blackstar Saloon where top country music talent such as Lonestar, Shane Chisholm, Jason Greeley, and Karen Lee Batten will be performing. Lastly, the 2010 Calgary Stampede Queen and Princesses will be crowned and the 2010 Indian Princess Sahvanne Weasel Traveller will be presented at the rodeo finals on Sunday afternoon. Some tickets are still available so if you haven’t gotten yours yet, do so now! Tickets are available for as little as $19.86.
Next, His Holiness the Fourteenth Dalai Lama will be visiting Calgary. This is the first visit of his Holiness to Calgary in 30 years and it promises to be an unforgettable, and possibly a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Participating in the University of Calgary‘s NOW conference, his Holiness will be holding his public address at the Pengrowth Saddledome on Sept. 30. For more information on the conference, his public address at Stampede Park, and ticket availability, see here.
Are you a new parent looking for some ideas? Or just looking for an excuse to spend some quality time with the newborn? Why not check out The Calgary Baby Show at the BMO Centre on Oct. 3 and 4? More than 100 exhibitors will be present showcasing the latest in technology, apparel, furniture, products, and toys to assist parents and caregivers. If you’re a new parent, there will be plenty of opportunities to learn from today’s leading authorities as interactive workshops and seminars will be available to provide you with valuable insights and presentations on raising a family. Finally, there will be plenty of fun and interactive play centres featuring arts and crafts sections throughout the venue that you and your child can participate in. Tickets for this event ($10 general, ages 12 and under get in free) will only be available at the door.
If newborns aren’t your thing and what you’re really craving is something in the vein of teenage angst with a little music and dancing thrown in, then perhaps this event will appeal more to you. On Saturday Oct. 3 and Sunday Oct. 4, the Boyce Theatre plays host to a modern day adaptation of West Side Story. West Side Story Calgary features a vibrant fusion of hip-hop, jazz, lyrical, modern, and funk dance styles. A strong collaboration of Calgary dancers, choreographers, and artists have come together to create this production in order to raise awareness of the dangers and consequences of gang life in Calgary. Tickets are still available and range from $15 to $20. Showtimes are at 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. each day.
Finally, hockey fans rejoice! The 2009-2010 NHL Hockey season is about to start as the Calgary Flames will be hosting the Vancouver Canucks on Thursday Oct. 1 for their home opener (and first game of the season!) at the Pengrowth Saddledome. Puck drop is at 8 p.m. Also at the Saddledome, the Calgary Hitmen will be taking on the Moose Jaw Warriors on Sunday Oct 4 at 2 p.m. in WHL Hockey action.
From rodeo to hockey, from newborns to grown-ups pretending they’re teenagers on stage, there’s a lot to see on Park this upcoming week. So come down and check some of them out, and tune in here again next week where we’ll preview some more of the events occurring Here. All year.
